Sri Lanka 070905d: Temple of Tooth Relic

This is the Big One - Sri Dalada Maligawa. A Unesco World Heritage Site, this temple houses one of the canine teeth of Buddha. As to how this piece of object landed in Kandy, it's one convoluted tale best described here: http://www.sridaladamaligawa.lk/

This place is the most sacred Buddhist site on the island, and one of the major ones globally. Originally built in the year 1600, it was rebuilt in the 18th century, only to be damaged by a Tamil Tigers' bomb in 1998. This damage has now been restored. Hopefully no Tigers today. :-)
